Step 1 – Contact Us

Step 2 – School Visit

We encourage parents to visit our school to:

  • Meet our team
  • View classrooms and facilities
  • Learn about our curriculum
    • Ask questions about our programmes & services 

Step 3 – Forms

Submit the required forms:

  • Copy of birth certificate
  • Clinic card / immunisation record
  • Medical aid information (if applicable)
  • Copy of parent/guardian ID

Age Requirements & Class Placement

At Little Rascals, class placement is guided by both age and developmental readiness in alignment with South African Department of Basic Education (DBE) age guidelines for Early Childhood Development and Foundation Phase education.

Please note that while age serves as the primary guideline, developmental readiness, emotional maturity, and individual support needs are also considered where appropriate.

Baby Tots

1 Baby tots

Ages: 4 Months – 1 Year

Our Baby Tots class provides a safe, loving, and nurturing environment for infants during the earliest stages of development.

Focus Areas:

  • Sensory exploration
  • Emotional bonding
  • Tummy time and movement
  • Language stimulation
  • Fine and gross motor development
  • Daily care routines

Children remain in this group until they are developmentally ready to transition into the next age group.

2 Jelly Tots

Ages: 1 – 2 Years

This class supports toddlers during an important stage of independence, communication, and early social development.

Focus Areas:

  • Language development
  • Music and movement
  • Sensory play
  • Social interaction
  • Fine motor activities
  • Early routine building

Children are grouped according to both age and developmental readiness.

Twinkle-Goofy 2

Ages: 2 – 3 Years

This stage focuses on learning through play, creativity, and exploration in a structured and supportive classroom environment.

Focus Areas:

  • Vocabulary and communication
  • Creative arts and messy play
  • Colour and shape recognition
  • Early independence
  • Social and emotional development
  • Structured play-based learning

Children begin developing classroom routines and group participation skills.

Tiny Tots & Dinky Tots

Dinky-Tiny 2

Ages: Turning 4 Years

These classes align with the DBE’s early learning developmental expectations for children preparing for Grade RR.

Recommended Placement:

Children turning 4 years old during the school year are generally placed in this group.

Focus Areas:

  • Early literacy and numeracy concepts
  • Fine motor development
  • Structured classroom activities
  • School readiness foundations
  • Emotional and social growth
  • ELDA-aligned learning experiences

Teddy & Smarty Tots

Teddy-Smarty 2

Ages: Turning 5 Years

These classes serve as Grade RR preparation classes and provide more structured educational activities aligned with school readiness expectations.

Recommended Placement:

Children turning 5 years old during the school year are generally placed in this group.

Focus Areas:

  • Pre-reading and pre-writing readiness
  • Mathematical thinking
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Concentration and independence
  • Structured educational routines
  • Social confidence and classroom participation

Grade R (Green &Yellow)

Grade R

Ages: Turning 6 Years

Grade R follows the Department of Basic Education’s Foundation Phase readiness expectations and CAPS-aligned school readiness programme.

DBE Age Guideline:

Children should generally turn 6 years old during the Grade R year.

Focus Areas:

  • Literacy and numeracy development
  • CAPS-aligned school readiness
  • Independent learning skills
  • Classroom structure and discipline
  • Emotional readiness for formal schooling
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking

Grade 1 Readiness (DBE Guideline)

According to DBE age norms:

  • * Children entering Grade 1 should generally already be 6 years old turning 7 during the Grade 1 year.
  • * Children who are younger may be encouraged to complete Grade R before formal schooling.

Little Rascals supports age-appropriate placement in accordance with DBE and SASAMS requirements.

Important Notes

* Placement is determined by both age and        developmental readiness.
* Little Rascals reserves the right to                     recommend the most suitable class 
   placement for each child.
* Transitions between classes may occur
   during the year where developmentally
   appropriate.
* Limited class sizes apply to ensure quality
   care and individual attention.
